Why Union?
Workers should consider joining a union of their profession, because, unions provide a higher standard of living and quality of life for working families. How? By negotiating a contract on behalf of the members and their employer. The two parties negotiate terms and conditions favorable to the members, such as, wages; health insurance; pensions, and safe working conditions. In addition, they may also negotiate vacation and holiday pay, grievance procedures and numerous work place conditions.
Unions are democratic, too. In other words, the officers are elected by the membership for a given term, very similar to how citizens elect a mayor and city council. This is a very important benefit for union members, because the officers work for them. Do you have someone who works for you at your job? Probably not.
Unions provide working families with a higher standard of living and quality of life by negotiating contracts with employers that secure decent living wages, affordable, quality health care, retirement and safe working conditions, to name a few.
Workers have a voice in the union, too. Their union has an obligation to represent them in their best interests and if those members believe the union is not fulfilling their obligation, then that member has a right to express their concern through the proper process.
